A groundbreaking first for Malaysia’s lock trade

The 1st Locksmith Competition and Crime Prevention Expo 2016 was a groundbreaking platform dedicated to celebrating the mastery of locksmiths while addressing crucial concerns about crime prevention. It marked the first time Malaysia’s locksmiths competed on a national stage.

Held over two days at One City, USJ, the event brought together locksmiths, security suppliers and the public, with the Royal Malaysia Police’s crime-prevention department as facilitator. It set the template for every GPPKM championship that followed.

When and where was GPPKM’s first locksmith competition held?
GPPKM’s 1st Locksmith Competition and Crime Prevention Expo was held on 29–30 October 2016 at City Hotel @ One City, USJ, Selangor, in collaboration with the Royal Malaysia Police’s Crime Prevention & Community Safety Department (JPJKK).
What is a locksmith (locksport) competition?
It is a timed, judged contest in which locksmiths demonstrate lock-picking, key-cutting and security-installation skill on standard locks and doors. GPPKM runs it as a public crime-prevention education event — showing how locks fail so the public can choose better security.
Who organised the 2016 expo?
It was organised by Gabungan Persatuan Peniaga Kunci Malaysia (GPPKM), Malaysia’s registered national locksmith trade association, together with the Royal Malaysia Police (JPJKK, Bukit Aman). International masters Peter Yeung (UK) and Lee Chung Ho (Hong Kong) supported the competition.
Is GPPKM a government body?
No. GPPKM is a registered national trade association (society reg. PPM-007-10-17042016), not a government agency or regulator. It partners the police on public-safety initiatives but does not dispatch jobs or set prices.
